ALPINE A4810 BY IED MASTER STUDENTS: A NEW SPORTINESS UNVEILED
ALPINE A4810 BY IED – The Istituto Europeo di Design(IED) presents A4810, the new hydrogen-powered concept car made in collaboration with Alpine, a brand of the Renault Group, and based on a brief from the Alpine design team. A result of the thesis project of the 28 students of the Master in Transportation Design a.y. 2020/21 at IED Turin, this concept car embraces the latest generation technologies while defending, at the same time, the traditional characteristics of the French brand founded in 1955. The Master in Transportation Design at IED Turin is coordinated by Michele Albera (Founder of MAP Design Studio).

DESIGN: ALPINE A4810 BY IED
In order to celebrate its sportiness, French heritage, and bond to the Alps, Alpine proposed IED students to design a “super berlinette” for the year 2035. This two-seater supercar was designed to be a high-performing vehicle both in terms of sports and environmental performance.
After the brief which launched last fall, students worked on the individual development of style proposals presented to the brand. Alpine then selected a combination of two main concept ideas. Based on the two selected proposals, the young designers created the A4810 Project by IED: a light yet powerful and agile concept car, which provides a pure driving pleasure. As a part of their design phase, the students sought to combine vision and innovation, without losing sight of the traditional roots of the French car manufacturer.
Furthermore, they told the story of the brand’s legacy by choosing a name that is indicative of the connection between the two realities that gave rise to their Project. In fact, 4810 is the height in meters of Mont Blanc. This is the highest and most majestic peak in the Alps which divides Italy from France, acting as a trait-d’-union between IED and Alpine. The latter is a brand that owes its name to those mountains and the pleasure of driving along the winding roads that cross them.
The team of students has also digitally designed the interiors through sketches, 3D models, renderings, animations, and the development of the HMI (Human Machine Interface). Also taking into account the hydrogen power supply, it means that they developed a full concept that is almost ready to travel the roads of a much more sustainable future, with no emissions.
TECH: ALPINE A4810 BY IED
A4810 Project by IED,(length 5091 mm – width 2010 mm – height 1055 mm – wheelbase 2717 mm) is a two-seater supercar that combines, in an experimental way, the berlinette car typology with a hydrogen power train. Although the engine and tanks present the typical architecture of a hyper sports vehicle, the significant innovation lies in the subtraction process. In fact, the design proposes an alternation between empty and full spaces, which visually lighten the vehicle and presents aerodynamic solutions inspired by Formula 1. Furthermore, A4810 Project by IED was also challenged with the task of Projecting the brand at the hedge of the sporting category.
The French spirit has been skilfully preserved, without making the car redundant with unnecessary formal elements but instead concentrating on the overlapping layers and sculptural aspects of the surfaces. It is the dual colouring and the matte black as well as carbon fibre elements that create an important contrast with the components of the car. In fact, these make them stand out according to their functions, whether they be aerodynamic, mechanical, or merely formal.
