Jony Ive to Work with Ferrari
Sir Jony Ive, a former Apple designer, is working with Ferrari to help the supercar maker produce its first electric vehicle. More than a dozen electric vehicles are anticipated to hit showrooms in the United States later this year, competing for customers with stand-alone EV companies such as Lucid Motors Inc. and Rivian Automotive LLC, as well as electric flag-bearer Tesla Inc.
LoveFrom, the design studio founded by Jony Ive and Marc Newson, has formed a creative relationship with Ferrari and Ferrari’s holding company Exor to work on presumably automotive-related projects and investigate “the economics of luxury” (via Bloomberg). LoveFrom’s work has remained relatively obscure since Ive left Apple in 2019 to create the design business, and Ferrari is the company’s second high-profile cooperation, following a separate agreement with Airbnb last year.
There are little details about what LoveFrom is doing for Exor or the luxury automaker. Exor states, “The first expression of this new relationship will bring together Ferrari’s famed performance and quality with LoveFrom’s unequalled experience and creativity that has defined remarkable world-changing products,”.
Exor is an Italian holding corporation held by the Agnelli family, which also owns Stellantis, which includes Chrysler and Fiat, and Juventus F.C., an Italian soccer team.
Ferrari declined to comment on the specifics of the partnership, but said it saw possibilities in collaborating with LoveFrom across the board. In addition to its engine-powered cars, the company sells clothing, watches, and other accessories.
Outside of the Ferrari brand, LoveFrom will collaborate with Exor on other projects. Exor’s chairman and chief executive, as well as Ferrari’s chairman, John Elkann, stated the holding company had begun conversations with LoveFrom’s founders immediately after the design studio was founded.
“Ferrari represents a first, exciting chance to do great things together as we build our future,” Mr. Elkann said.
