Renault Emblème Unveiled: A hydrogen-powered hybrid SUV that previews a new era in design

Oct 04, 2024

The 2024 Paris Motor Show will be an exciting event for Renault. Alongside the much-anticipated production version of the Renault 4, the brand will also reveal a futuristic concept car: the Renault Emblème. This concept car, similar in size to the BMW 3 Series, hints at Renault's plans to continue building larger D-segment vehicles. What's exciting about the Emblème is its advanced powertrain. It features a hybrid system combining battery-electric power with a small hydrogen fuel cell. The main drive comes from a compact 40kWh battery and a rear-mounted 214bhp electric motor, offering a range of several hundred kilometres. On top of that, the hydrogen fuel cell acts as a range extender, adding an extra 350 kilometres (217 miles) to its overall driving distance. This innovative setup gives us a glimpse of Renault's future in sustainable driving.

The Emblème, showcases a daring evolution in the brand’s design language. With a striking blend of futuristic elements and strong aerodynamic lines, this SUV exudes innovation and luxury, promising to make a statement in the electric mobility landscape.

Renault Emblème boasts a futuristic silhouette

The first thing that stands out about the Renault Emblème is its smooth, flowing silhouette. The sculpted bodywork features smooth curves that seamlessly transition from the front to the rear, giving the car a sense of fluidity. This design enhances its aerodynamic profile, helping to reduce drag, which is essential for electric vehicles aiming for maximum range efficiency.

One of the most distinctive features is the car’s pronounced wheel arches, which are emphasized by their blackened trim. These arches give the Emblème a muscular stance, indicating that despite its sleek design, the SUV has the power and presence to command the road. The high-riding stance adds to the vehicle’s appeal as a practical yet premium SUV.

A front-focused identity

The front fascia of the Emblème is perhaps the most defining aspect of its design. The front grille area is minimal, a signature feature of electric vehicles since they require less cooling. In place of the traditional grille, Renault has opted for a slim, futuristic design with horizontal elements that complement the full-width LED headlights.

The angular headlamps contribute to the overall sharpness of the design, with piercing LED strips cutting through the air like blades. The lighting arrangement reflects Renault's commitment to modernity and cutting-edge technology, projecting confidence and innovation. The Emblème’s smooth surfaces are interrupted only by subtle, intelligent details. For instance, the handles are flush with the bodywork, maintaining the SUV’s sleek appearance. This approach not only enhances aesthetics but also contributes to aerodynamic efficiency. The side profile is clean, and the design incorporates subtle creases, which lend the vehicle an athletic vibe while ensuring it remains sophisticated.

Another striking feature is the rearview camera setup, replacing traditional side mirrors, which reduces drag and brings a modern touch to the overall design. This reflects Renault’s intent to integrate advanced technology while staying true to the clean design philosophy.

Rear Design: A touch of simplicity and elegance

At the rear, the Emblème continues its minimalist yet powerful design theme. The rear lights are slim and extend across the width of the vehicle, creating a cohesive and symmetrical look that complements the front. The illuminated Renault logo at the centre of the rear adds a futuristic touch, signalling the brand’s ambition in the EV market. The lower rear bumper is black, creating a stark contrast with the body colour, which gives the SUV a sporty yet elegant rear view. Overall, the back end of the Renault Emblème is clean and uncomplicated, allowing the bold design of the car to speak for itself without unnecessary embellishments.

The futuristic design extends to the wheels as well. The large, multi-spoke alloys feature an intricate design pattern that adds a touch of sophistication to Emblème's aesthetic. The dark finish of the wheels contrasts beautifully with the teal-green body colour, enhancing the SUV's two-tone appearance. The aerodynamic wheel covers also suggest that these wheels are built for efficiency, again catering to the needs of an electric drivetrain. With the Emblème concept, Renault is clearly embracing a more fluid and streamlined design language. This SUV blends aesthetics with functionality, emphasizing aerodynamics, sustainability, and the integration of cutting-edge technology. The clean lines, intelligent use of materials, and minimalist detailing make the Emblème a true head-turner in the electric SUV segment.
