Pininfarina paves the path to the future with TEOREMA, a futuristic and daring Virtual Concept Car created entirely with virtual reality technology. In the name of user experience and technology, a whole new vision of fully electric, autonomous mobility has been developed, with the goal of creating a sense of community and encouraging interactions between passengers and the surrounding environment.
TEOREMA was built from the inside out as a representation of Pininfarina’s vision for future shared, hyperconnected mobility. Starting with an electric skateboard chassis that allows the car to have a pleasant vast area on the inside, the design teams in Cambiano and Shanghai built the interior experience before constructing the outside. The Pininfarina Virtual Lab, which is a vital element of the design process, used Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and innovative Mixed Reality technology to instantly explore numerous shapes, experiences, and scenarios throughout the project.
TEOREMA is designed to allow travelers to share their journey experiences while still providing moments of privacy when needed. Getting inside the TEOREMA is as easy as going into a living room, with the back door opening and the roof extending upwards and forwards, leaving ground to a foot-triggering floor that leads passengers to their seats.
TEOREMA, which draws on Pininfarina’s expertise in interior design and the pursuit of happiness, creates an interior space that can be used in a variety of ways and delivers an entirely new level of ease of movement inside the car. The people are arranged in a pentagon, resulting in a narrow cabin in the front and a broad body at the back. Travelers can engage in various tasks, moments, and experiences in a central, modular space that is analogous to a home environment, such as a private backspace where passengers can rest or sleep. Because there is no side entry, passengers can utilize the side of the car as a backrest, making the car stiffer and lighter.
In light of Pininfarina’s unique experience enabled by its patented Wind Tunnel, TEOREMA also incorporates a new aerodynamic design proven through CFD analyses. TEOREMA is divided into three segments when viewed from above. Open air channels connect the center living room to the exterior surfaces on each side of the car, allowing air to flow freely throughout the vehicle. The smooth decrease in area of duct sections causes an acceleration of air flow flowing through them. The high-speed jets that exit at the car’s back end lower the wake dimension, enhancing aerodynamic performance, reducing drag, and increasing economy.
TEOREMA’s outer shape is influenced by technical concepts and the experiences that its inhabitants should have. Purity, elegance, and innovation are the pillars of Pininfarina’s designs, but this time the team intended to produce something sophisticatedly remarkable despite utilizing relatively simple shapes, and the lack of side doors lends the TEOREMA a surprising aesthetic lightness.
TEOREMA is totally self-driving, but it can quickly transition between multiple driving modes based on passenger preferences and driving situations: in AUTONOMY MODE, the vehicle is completely self-driving, therefore no driver is required. The driver faces the other four passengers, providing enough space between them to make everyone feel like they’re in their own little cocoon. The DRIVE MODE creates a sense of community by sharing everything that happens while the car is in motion. The varied regions of the interiors take on the same colors, creating a subconscious link that binds all of the residents together in a common experience.
