Mazda of the future: A designer's envision for the Kodo design language in new era

Aug 20, 2023

Based on the design language ‘Kodo, the soul of motion’, Mazda has shown its own design that is more emotional, elegant, and as a craftsmanship than any other brand. However, they did not show how they would present ‘Kodo’ in the future autonomous era. How will 'Kodo' evolve and come to us in a highly advanced society? Will Mazda still appeal to people simply with an elegant sculpture created under the slogan 'soul of motion'?

A Glimpse into the Future

In an era where cars are not mere modes of transportation but intricate technological ecosystems, Mazda's 'Kodo' design language faces a unique crossroads. How will 'Kodo' evolve to retain its captivating emotional appeal in a world driven by autonomy? As autonomous vehicles gradually populate our streets, the physical interaction between driver and car transforms. The once-driver-centric design philosophy must now grapple with the challenges of crafting an emotional bond with passengers who are more passengers than drivers.

Dohoon Jeong's inspiration from unexpected sources often catalyses design evolution. In this context, the movie Ghost in the Shell' becomes a fascinating source of inspiration. The captivating aesthetic elements exhibited by the 'geisha robot' in the film ignite an exploration of design possibilities. Guided by three pivotal design keywords - organic volume, curved parting line, and hidden technology with intensive details - the path to reimagining 'Kodo' begins.

Organic Volume: From Inspiration to Creation

The concept of organic volume resonates deeply with Mazda's pursuit of emotionally evocative design. The quest for seamless integration between form and function continues in the upcoming EV era. Building on the movie's geisha robot aesthetic, Dohoon envisions a design that transcends mechanical precision, mimicking the organic growth of forms. The result is a sculptural language that flows organically, creating an emotional connection between the car and the observer.

Curved Parting Line: Where Beauty Meets Engineering

In the realm of design, the intersection of aesthetics and engineering often creates moments of breathtaking beauty. Here, the new Mazda concept incorporates a curved parting line, a subtle yet powerful detail that infuses elegance and cohesion into the design. By seamlessly blending form and function, the curved parting line is testimony to Mazda's commitment to craftsmanship.

Hidden Technology with Intensive Details

In the age of autonomy, the allure of hidden technology takes centre stage. Dohoon envisions a design that conceals intricate technology within its elegant lines, seamlessly integrating the practical with the poetic. Intensive details emerge as a hallmark of sophistication, inviting the viewer to explore deeper and uncover the layers of complexity that define the vehicle's design.

The Dual Paths of Design Exploration

Emotion drives Mazda's 'Kodo' design, taking centre stage in the organic, emotional form direction. Drawing inspiration from the image of wires entwined in the geisha robot's head, the designer envisions a form that radiates outward from a driver-centred double cockpit structure. This design path aims to capture the essence of emotion and translate it into a tangible and visually striking design language.

In the second design direction, he further explores twisting elegance. The vehicle's surface is artfully curved at an unexpected point, a gesture that creates intrigue and dynamic movement. Simultaneously, technical structures related to downforce are woven into the design, fostering a harmonious relationship between form and function. This path presents a fusion of modernity and tradition, with patterns reminiscent of geisha robot collars and umbrellas gracing intricate design elements.

From the explorations of the twisted shape emerges a new structure that unfolds gradually, like a wound being unravelled. This structure serves a dual purpose: as an organic rear spoiler that enhances hypercar aerodynamics during driving and as a canvas for artistic expression. Patterns inspired by the movie's aesthetic are carefully incorporated into design elements, fostering an organic movement that harmoniously connects various vehicle components.

In a departure from mechanical rigidity, the concept's design delves into organic curves reminiscent of the human bone structure. This approach enhances aerodynamics and underscores the brand's commitment to seamless integration. The resulting design blends seamlessly with the upper body shape, paying homage to the marriage of form and function that defines Mazda's ethos.

Inside the Cabin: The Birth of Volume

The interior cabin of Mazda's envisioned vehicle takes cues from the poignant moment in 'Ghost in the Shell' when the robot emerges from the white liquid. This pivotal scene is the source of inspiration for the cabin's volume, creating the illusion of organic emergence from a flat surface. This design choice enhances the occupants' sensory experience, immersing them in a world of movement and emotion.

Within the cabin, air tunnels intersect between the front air intake holes and the house, forming a natural airflow pathway to the rear spoiler. This innovative design is a testament to Mazda's dedication to aerodynamics and downforces. The designer continues seamlessly merging technology with aesthetics in a world where performance and efficiency are paramount.
