The black-necked crane, a national protection animal in China, faces significant threats due to habitat destruction from human activities. These migratory birds, known for their graceful presence and vital ecological role, are increasingly vulnerable. The C-Protector project aims to provide a sustainable solution to protect these cranes and support the scientific personnel dedicated to their conservation. Through innovative research and design, this project seeks to enhance the habitat of the black-necked cranes and equip researchers with the tools necessary to safeguard these majestic birds.

Caohai, located in Guizhou Province, China, is a crucial habitat for the black-necked cranes. This region is characterized by its wetland terrain, centred around a lake with surrounding hills. The unique landscape presents several challenges for scientific researchers tasked with monitoring and protecting the cranes. Through thorough investigation, three main issues were identified that hinder the effectiveness of conservation efforts: navigating the difficult wetland terrain, insufficient space for carrying equipment, and vulnerability to weather conditions.

The Hot Air Balloon Solution
To tackle these challenges, the C-Protector project has proposed an innovative solution: a hot air balloon equipped with advanced technology. This approach aims to overcome the difficulties of wetland terrain and provide a versatile platform for scientific research. The balloon will operate quietly, using small propellers to minimize noise pollution and reduce environmental impact. It will feature extensive storage areas to maximize space, allowing researchers to carry all necessary equipment efficiently. Additionally, a comprehensive protective cover will shield researchers from adverse weather conditions, enabling uninterrupted work.

The design of the hot air balloon is centred around lightweight, functional, and digital principles. The core sketch explores a cylindrical layout to reduce weight and increase space utilization. The balloon is designed with two layers: the upper level, occupied by the captain and calculators, featuring computers and sample detection equipment, and the lower level, dedicated to the observer, with a 360-degree rotational seat connected to a track, allowing for comprehensive bird watching.

The exterior design includes solar charging panels and small promoters for propulsion. The interior design features a hexagonal pattern to enhance the sense of technology and functionality. Key elements include observer seats combined with special bird-watching mirrors and track systems for optimal viewing, calculators' workstations equipped with computers and analytical tools, and the captain's station, which includes a mobile screen for task management.




The C-Protector project represents a significant advancement in the conservation of black-necked cranes. By addressing the challenges faced by researchers and providing an innovative hot air balloon solution, this project aims to create a better habitat for these birds and enhance the effectiveness of scientific efforts. Through thoughtful design and technological integration, C-Protector offers a promising path forward in the protection of one of China's most treasured migratory birds.
