A designer's take on the future of mobile workspaces

Jun 15, 2024

Travelling, whether for work or fun, gives us a lot of free time and space. If we use this time well, it can make our journeys more productive and enjoyable. The future of cars aims to create a mobile office. It's designed for people who have busy work lives and want to make the most of their time on the go. This new idea uses digital technology, virtual reality (VR), and augmented reality (AR) to make a flexible space that suits different work needs, like designing ads or doing financial analysis.

The main aim of this new design is to create a versatile workspace that suits the needs of creative and business professionals. Inside, the design is carefully planned to be a space where you can work, relax, and even sleep comfortably. One of the big benefits of this mobile office is that it gives you privacy and quiet, which are important for staying focused and getting work done, even when you're with other people. This innovative design draws inspiration from Skoda Auto's new design strategy, Modern Solid. However, it takes a step further by envisioning the next development phase, Modern Solid 2.0. This future-oriented design is more robust, featuring soft transitions on surfaces and distinct visual elements like T and U shapes with negative pressed parts. The interior workspace is fundamentally based on a railway system implemented in door panels, ensuring that no elements interfere with the open space concept, thereby maximizing the usability of the interior.

Key technologies and innovative features in the mobile workspace concept

One of the pivotal technologies in this design is the Samsung Fold. This technology facilitates a seamless and efficient transition between various work modes. The computer display can bend 90 degrees, making it ideal for office or creative tasks. The display is versatile, allowing it to be rotated and used as a compact table for analogue work. For passengers, the display emerges from the dashboard, while for those in the back, it is fixed in the door panel and can rotate 90 degrees.

The traditional fixed middle console has been replaced with a moveable console, introducing a new level of innovation. This console can be used by passengers as a tablet in meeting mode or as an armrest and storage space for the driver. It offers flexibility and can be hidden when not in use, providing space for larger bags in the rear part of the interior. This feature enhances the practicality of the vehicle, ensuring that all available space is utilized efficiently.

The interesting part is that the car interior has three main modes: Work, Meeting, and Intimacy. Each mode creates a personal space with seats that can move back and forth. In Work mode, the back seats can be adjusted to make room, while Meeting mode arranges seats for group talks. Intimacy mode offers privacy, great for relaxing on long trips. SUV size provides room for cool features. Seats can rotate 180 degrees, ensuring no leg bumps. They even have relax mode, with adjustable leg rests that tuck away when not in use. Upholstery like recycled tyres or graphene is comfy and tough. Seats adjust for sitting, napping, or relaxing during charging.

Did you notice the dashboard? It features a horizontal display and a hideable steering wheel that folds under the dashboard during Work and Meeting modes. This design ensures that the steering wheel is only visible when needed, creating more space for work and meetings. The second passenger also enjoys ample space with Simply Clever elements, providing additional storage and a removable suitcase.

This new mobile workspace concept is designed to blend work, fun, and relaxation while travelling. Using advanced tech and smart designs, cars become mobile offices for today's workers. Looking ahead, these improvements aim to make travel more useful and enjoyable, turning journeys into valuable parts of daily life. This futuristic approach means travelling can be as productive and fun as being at home or in the office, marking a new era in how we move around for work and leisure.
