Honda Hypercar EV Concept is a designer's fresh take on the iconic 1990 Honda NSX

Jun 20, 2024

Honda is gearing up to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) market with a bold plan to introduce 30 innovative models worldwide by 2030. Leading this ambitious initiative is the development of a next-generation Honda EV hypercar concept. This groundbreaking project aims to blend advanced technology with Honda's rich heritage, creating a vehicle that not only redefines performance and design but also sets new benchmarks in the electric hypercar market. This new hypercar concept is expected to feature state-of-the-art battery technology, offering impressive range and power.

The NSX, a flagship model in Honda's midship sports car lineup, serves as the inspiration for this new hypercar. Positioned above the current NSX, the new Honda Hypercar EV concept will retain key design elements such as the C-pillar, rear taillights, and side character lines, paying tribute to the original 1990 NSX. By incorporating classic design details and modern elements, the designer wants to showcase a concept that honours its legacy while setting new standards in the electric hypercar market.

The design theme of this new hypercar focuses on interpreting parallel structures to achieve a more stable appearance. This concept of parallel structures involves using lines and forms that run alongside each other, creating a sense of balance and symmetry throughout the car's design. By emphasizing these parallel elements, the vehicle appears more grounded and visually cohesive, which enhances its overall stability and presence on the road.

Even though the new hypercar is an EV, its design sketches deliberately mimic those of internal combustion engine (ICE) hypercars. This means that the design retains the aggressive and powerful look typical of high-performance sports cars. The sketches feature bold, sweeping lines and dramatic contours, capturing the essence of speed and agility. To refine the exterior design, various silhouettes were explored through side variations. This process involved creating multiple versions of the car's profile, each with different shapes and angles. The designer experimented with a range of possibilities, from sleek and aerodynamic forms to more angular and muscular ones. This exploration allowed him to identify the silhouette that best balances sportiness with sophistication.

The result of this design approach is a hypercar that maintains a sporty yet sophisticated look. The sporty aspect is conveyed through sharp lines, bold curves, and an aggressive stance, all of which suggest high performance and speed. At the same time, the sophisticated side of the design is evident in the car's clean lines, refined details, and elegant proportions, which give it a polished and upscale feel.

Unlike typical hypercars, this vehicle features front lighting that wraps around the lower part of the bumper, making the car appear more stable and wider. As an electric vehicle, its design follows a simple and conservative style rather than an overly distinctive one. This approach emphasizes the innovative aspects of an EV hypercar while incorporating traditional Honda design elements. The result is a blend that ensures the vehicle is both futuristic and instantly recognizable as a Honda. The project benefits significantly from the expertise of the Alias subdivision, which played a crucial role in refining the design process.

The Honda Hypercar EV Concept epitomizes the future of Honda's design philosophy by focusing on stability, simplicity, and a blend of traditional and innovative elements. The project's design approach not only pushes the boundaries of automotive aesthetics but also reinforces the importance of functional and aerodynamic efficiency. The involvement of the Alias subdivision has ensured a high level of precision and refinement, while the educational aspects of the project offer invaluable experience for aspiring designers.
