Volkswagen ID. LIFE : Accelerate Sustainability

Volkswagen ID. Life

“The Volkswagen ID. LIFE is our vision of next-generation fully electric urban mobility. The concept car provides a preview of an ID. model in the small car segment that we will be launching in 2025, priced at around 20,000 euros. This means we are making electric mobility accessible to even more people. In creating the ID. LIFE, we have consistently focused on the needs of younger customers. We believe that, even more so than today, the car of the future will be about lifestyle and personal expression. The customer of tomorrow won’t simply want to get from A to B; they will be much more interested in the experiences that a car can offer. The ID. LIFE is our answer to this.”

Ralf Brandstätter, CEO, Volkswagen

Volkswagen ID. LIFE ACCELERATE strategy is speeding up the transition to electric mobility once more, making sustainable mobility accessible to even more people by 2025, a full two years ahead of schedule. The ID. LIFE concept automobile, which debuted at the International Motor Show IAA MOBILITY 2021 in Munich, presents an idea of how such a vehicle would appear.

People and community experiences are at the heart of the vision for a totally electric small automobile for the urban environment. The ID concept automobile blends sustainability and technology with a wide range of applications. LIFE may be transformed into a mini-cinema, a gaming center, or simply a place to relax.

Design

The Volkswagen ID. LIFE has a very straightforward, pared-down, and high-quality design. Decorative components and add-on sections, as well as any complex mix of materials, are excluded. The car’s purest aspect is enhanced by the horizontal divide between the body, glass surfaces, and roof. The ID. LIFE has a personalized and removable roof made of air chamber cloth that gives it an open-air sensation while also decreasing vehicle weight.

The front wheels are driven by an electric motor. The ID. LIFE is based on a scaled-down version of Volkswagen’s modular electric drive matrix (MEB), which was created exclusively for the small car market. Front-wheel drive is the first time a vehicle based on the MEB has been introduced. The ID. LIFE goes from zero to 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds, thanks to its 172 kW (234 PS) electric motor, and has a range of 400 kilometers thanks to its 57 kWh high-voltage battery (WLTP).

The ID. LIFE’s eco friendly nature is evident in the materials and paint finishes used. Wood chips are utilized as a natural coloring agent in the clear finish for the bodywork, along with a bio-based hardener. The roof and front cover of the air chamber are made entirely of recycled PET bottles. The dashboard and rear seat surrounds are made of wood, while the seat surfaces and door trims are made of ArtVelours Eco. Bio-oil, natural rubber, and rice husks are just a few of the elements used to make the ID. LIFE’s tires.

The ID. LIFE is a trustworthy companion for a variety of digital experiences. It may be quickly transformed into a theatre or gaming club, for example. A video gaming console and projector are included in the vehicle, as well as a projection screen that expands from the dash panel as needed. Other devices can be connected to the interior’s 230-volt, 16-amp power supply as needed. In keeping with the idea of the car as a companion for different situations and lifestyles, the seating design is also extremely adaptable. The front seat bench, as well as the back seat bench, can be completely folded down. This opens up many possibilities, from theatre seats to a two-meter-long bed to a cargo variant that maximizes luggage space.

Both the outside and interior mirrors are replaced by cameras and a display. A touch panel on the hexagonal, open-topped steering wheel controls essential driving functions, and a smartphone can be linked into the operating system. Personal gadgets, such as cellphones and tablets, can be used to control the navigation system. Music, movies, and games stored on the smartphone can be used in the ID. LIFE smoothly, with graphics projected on the projection screen.
