Intermediate Color and Trim Designer is assigned to a design project from the initial research and concept phase through production. He/she contributes to the project development and strategy on a specific project/project phase. He/she provides hands-on creative output.

Role Responsibilities

  • Generates design concepts for assigned projects
  • Contributes design talents of automotive projects (production/concepts) within the parameters of the individual design processes
  • Creates new product applications and strategies for VW both on a global basis and within the US Market
  • Develops design ideas into virtual/physical ideations and overall theme concepts
  • Collaborates with Internal designers and specialists in other departments (Exterior, Interior, Fabrication, Modeling)
  • Collaborates with external vendors/ suppliers
  • Provides solutions to existing tasks
  • Participates in production design presentations with a high level of creative input
  • Develops new concepts, product ideas and strategies for VW based on market and competitor analysis
  • Applies knowledge of consumer design trends and forecasting
  • Analyses relevant materials, organizes and archives them

Location – California, USA


  • 3-5 years of experience in Automotive Design at an OEM or equivalent
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Automotive or Industrial Design or equivalent required
  • Master’s Degree in Automotive or Industrial Design or equivalent desired

  • Computer savvy – skilled in the use of software

Required Specialized Skills

  • Demonstrated visual communication skills to convey concept, theme, colour and research
  • Up-to-date digital technology (3D CAD software, 2D illustration software) knowledge
  • Material development skills (textile, vinyl, leather, carpet, headliner, interior and exterior colour and finishes)
  • Ability to perform colour tuning and mastering
  • Deep knowledge of American culture and the automotive market
  • Proven design experience in production and concept vehicles
  • Proficient verbal communication skills

Desired Specialized Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of the main VW Group brands
  • Knowledge of automotive manufacturing and product planning process
  • Wide interest/knowledge of the creative industry (e.g. entertainment, product design, fashion, tech)
  • Exceptional time management skills
  • Must be willing to travel within short (3-4 days) notice
